PKA's Ballinasloe old persons' housing completed

Originally commissioned by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in 2010, the 18-unit project was developed by Cluid Housing who commissioned PKA on foot of a 2015 competitive tender to take the scheme from detail design to completion.

Designed to create a village-like enclave, all units have an aspect onto the shared-surface 'street' that connects with both the town centre and the retail park behind. Comprising a mix of one and two-bedroom units, each has its own private patio to the rear, as well as access to the two communal 'allotment' gardens at either end of the scheme - thus facilitating the development of a sense of community among residents.

An exemplar of best practice in environmental sustainability, the scheme's highly insulated fabric, air-source heat pumps and passive ventilation have achieved an A2 building energy rating, thus adding to both the comfort of residents and reducing their heating costs.
