Bar Na Don. Glandore

This 1950's house, in Glandore, is typical of houses of the period - in its layout and decoration, and in its minimal regard for the potential of its spectacular site. With views of the harbour and access to the shore, the house stands on a narrow shelf which falls eight-meters to high-water level at the lower end of the site.

The open-plan living and dining area has views to the harbour, and a continuous glass wall opens onto a semi-covered verandah. The upper hallway is lit by a continuous rooflight, which brings sunshine into the depth of the plan.

Externally, the house is essentially unaltered when seen from the road. On the sea side it is transformed by the addition of a new layer, formed by the fully-glazed extension, terraces and external staircases connecting each level to the garden and seashore below.

The renovation, completed in 1998, featured in numerous house-design publications and has received extensive print and television coverage.
