PKA won Dublin City Council’s 2005 competitive tender for the redevelopment of one of the city council’s largest senior citizens’ complexes at Kylemore Road, Ballyfermot.
The focus of PKA’s design is the creation of a communal courtyard for the residents. All units look onto this lozenge shape space – open on its north and south sides – and built above a single level of underground parking.
At its southern end, there is a residents’ communal building, which provides health, recreation and social facilities for older people in the community.
The project was passed by the local area committee and unanimously approved by the city council’s elected members in 2007. It is now on hold pending Government approval to proceed to planning permission and tender.
