Sheltered housing. Malahide
Following the success of our Gorey project, PKA was again commissioned by the St. Vincent De Paul Society, in association with Fingal County Council, to design this sheltered housing and communal building development at Estuary Road, Malahide.
The design consists of two ranges of housing along opposing sides of the site; a curved terrace winds along the western boundary, and this is faced by a series of pavilion blocks, each containing three units, which screen adjoining estate housing to the east.
Making an enclosed garden as the focus of the scheme provides a secure ambience for the elderly residents. All living rooms face into this open space, maximising passive surveillance and generating an environment of communal engagement among residents.
The project has been widely praised by its new residents and housing professionals alike. It received the 2009 Irish Council for Social Housing Award for housing for the elderly.
