Sloperton. Monkstown

This villa in Monkstown, Co. Dublin is an excellent example of the fine Victorian architecture which accompanied the construction of the Dublin to Kingstown railway in the 1840's. The protected structure was in multiple units when purchased by PKA’s clients in 2006. The brief was to restore and conserve those features which contributed to the house’s special character, ensuring that alterations were of the best contemporary design, and did not detract from the quality of the original.

This involved reconfiguration of existing rooms to provide en-suite bathrooms and such-like while retaining the fine proportions of the house’s principal reception rooms. An extension to the rere incorporates part of the original house into a dramatic new kitchen and family room wing, with a contemporary oak staircase providing an alternative vertical link to compliment the fine existing Victorian staircase.

The striking and bold landscape design was carried out in association with the client and the award-winning contemporary garden designer Diarmuid Gavin.
