Civic Space. Navan

Following the award of first prize in a 1999 international two-stage competition, PKA were appointed as architects for this new civic space in Navan town centre.

The brief was to reconfigure the existing surface car park as a new urban space - a civic focus for the town, a meeting place with shopping, cafes and pubs, and a venue for festivals, events and celebrations.

PKA’s design creates a raised shared-surface central area. A tree-lined apron provides a new pedestrian mall along the shopfronts on the south side of the space, and organises short-term parking along this edge.

The space features a palette of quality indigenous materials - local limestone and granite - plus specially selected lighting, furniture and landscape elements.

Construction commenced in 2007 and the project was completed - on time and within budget - in May 2008. It was shortlisted for Best Civic Space in the 2009 RIAI awards.
