Boathouse. County Mayo
This modest boathouse’s setting is on Lough Conn, Co. Mayo, close to the water's edge, in a beautiful woodland location. The project is part of the overall development of a 200 acre estate, with designs being prepared by PKA for a large family home to replace an existing 1960's bungalow on the site.
The boathouse functions as a space for wintering boats, doubling as guest accommodation during the summer holiday season. It is orientated to frame views of the lake, and to form a backdrop to the magnificent garden.
Its minimal floor plate contains an open-plan living area, a single bedroom, basic cooking and bathing facilities, and a small loft for extra accommodation. Retention of as many trees as possible was of paramount importance during the development of the design.
Providing a tranquil waterside retreat from the main house, the boathouse’s cladding has matured to a silver hue, blending the structure seamlessly into its predominantly silver-birch woodland site.
