Kodak House. Dublin

The renovation and conservation of the Kodak building in Rathmines has given a new lease of life to one of Dublin’s few remaining examples of Art Deco architecture.

PKA’s client emphasised that the design be in sympathy with the robust industrial style of the original. The open-plan space is planned to create a studio-type arrangement, with internal rooms providing enclosed spaces for private meetings and back-up services.

The most significant intervention is the new mezzanine floor - and its curved rooflight structure - which runs the full length of the first floor and provides extra space, additional daylight, and an attractive work environment. Limited colour and materials highlight the original structure, and create a dynamic architectural effect with the minimum of means.

The project received an RIAI Award and won a prestigious Glen Dimplex Design Award in 2002. It was shortlisted for the RIAI Silver Medal for Conservation and has featured in international publications on the design principles of remodelling existing buildings for contemporary use.
