PKA : HOUSING : Gerald Griffin Street. Cork
Gerald Griffin Street. Cork
PKA were commissioned by Cork City Council to prepare proposals for this derelict site on Gerald Griffin Street, adjoining St Mary’s and St Anne’s Cathedral.
The scheme is a senior citizens’ sheltered housing development consisting of eight apartment units. They are grouped in three separate blocks comprising four two-storey maisonettes and four single-storey apartments. All are accessed by an external staircase from a shared street level courtyard.
The project was completed - on time and within budget - in 2002, and it has been much praised for its success, both in terms of residents’ satisfaction and its improvement of the urban setting.
The project was selected for exhibition at the 2009 National housing Conference, and it has been featured in the RIAI / DOEHLG published New Housing 2.
