Scoil Mhuire Community School. Clane
PKA's first educational project was a major redevelopment of Scoil Mhuire Community School, Clane, Co. Kildare. As part of this development, PKA designed this new sports hall for school and community use.
Separate to the main school building, it accommodates a full size basketball court and associated facilities for changing, storage and administration.
PKA placed particular emphasis on natural daylighting and ventilation, and the development of an economically viable solution which would be aesthetically distinguished and durable in use throughout its lifespan.
The design of the structure is echoed in the elevational treatment: columns support lateral beams, carrying cantilevered trusses which support the roof.
The project was completed - on-time and within budget - in summer 2002. It has added a new dimension to the physical education and sports curriculum of Scoil Mhuire. The hall has been widely acclaimed and selected for publication in Architecture Ireland.
