PKA : DOMESTIC : The Stables. Shrewsbury
The Stables. Shrewsbury
Adjoining the Lion & Pheasant Hotel in Shrewsbury’s town centre, this mews house was built on the site of the former stables of this historic 16th century coaching inn. The brief was to reconstruct the stable as a bright, contemporary holiday apartment, catering to the needs of modern tourism while retaining and respecting the atmosphere of its surroundings.
In order to maximise space on the small footprint, PKA located the bedrooms at the lower level and the living spaces above. The living room's spacious loft-style interior has French windows to capture views to the half-timbered facade of the 17th century hotel buildings opposite. The volume of this open-plan space is exaggerated by its vaulted ceiling and continuous rooflight along one side, bringing daylight into the depth of the plan.
PKA designed the interiors throughout, including furniture and fittings. The high standard of finish is reflected in the project's four-star British Tourism accreditation.
