Monastery Road Bridge. Dublin

Following the award of first prize in an international competition, PKA in conjunction with Roughan & O Donavan Engineers designed this 112 m span bridge crossing the N7 at Monastery Road, Dublin.

It is hung from two pinned steel piers or blades by 20 spiral strand diagonal cables.

Designed as an iconic gateway to the city, the aim is to make a memorable reference point in an otherwise anonymous landscape. Its sculptural organic form is intended to contribute to the identity of place, a recognisable subject to be seen from a distance and at speed.
