This project for two holiday houses is located at Kilsallagh, Co. Mayo, close to Croagh Patrick and Old Head, and overlooking Clew Bay and Achill Island.
PKA’s design and grouping of the houses reflects traditional farmstead layouts and clachan developments. The houses have been designed to incorporate elements of the vernacular, while maintaining a contemporary expression. Indigenous, and locally sourced materials reduce the embodied energy of the houses.
The houses have been widely published and showcased on numerous television house-design programmes. They have been used as an exemplar of best practice rural housing in a number of local authority guidance documents.
The project has featured in both the RIAI and AAI architecture awards, and it was Highly Commended in the biennial RIAI Silver Medal for Housing, the premier award for housing design in Ireland.
