PKA: Sustainability

The principles and practice of sustainable development are central to PKA’s philosophy and to the ethos of the practice. In design, research and training, we constantly seek to improve our performance in every area of environmental responsibility.

At its simplest, sustainable development is about ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and in the future; and meeting present needs without compromising the stock of natural resources remaining for generations to come.

Without regard to the size or value of the project, PKA’s policy is to prioritise energy and environmental issues from the outset.

We believe that sustainability demands a comprehensive approach, not just to the architecture of individual buildings, but also - and most importantly - to planning cities and the wider built environment.

We seek to set an example of environmental responsibility, applying the principles and practice of resource conservation, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and responsible travel patterns.

In terms of buildings, this impacts on siting, built form, structure, materials, adaptability and long life, and minimising the massive energy use of buildings in the modern world.

Reflecting the EU’s Bristol Accord and the Leipzig Charter, PKA believes that planning and the design of sustainable urban neighbourhoods also play central roles in the battle against climate change.

In numerous projects, PKA has placed these issues to the forefront: from an eco-house in Mayo to the design of Galway County Council’s Tuam library and area offices, OPW’s Heuston Gate development and the Phibsborough/Mountjoy local area plan.
